Dave Claxton, Varley Red Top's
marketing manager, paid a visit to
the teams competing at Silverstone
this year. For the past few years,
DMS technologies has supported
Formula Student teams with
batteries and chargers. In addition
we provide advice and technical
support regarding the installation
of batteries in the race cars.
Generally the racing cars
incorporate a 600cc motorcycle
engine and therefore use a Varley
Red Top 8 racing battery, cars with
a greater electrical power
requirement may use a Varley Red
Top 15.
This year saw the Bavarian
universities of Munich and
Stuttgart (home of BMW and Mercedes
Benz respectively) take first and
second, however the University
of Hertfordshire team was a
creditable 5th. Other Varley Red
Top supported race cars were
Liverpool John Moores (21st),
Warwick (22nd), University of
Birmingham (37th) and Huddersfield
(54th) out of a total of 76
competitors in Class 1.
FS 2010 was the 13th running of
Formula Student in the UK,
organised annually by the Institute
of Mechanical Engineers and
includes Formula Student teams from
around the world including North
America and Australia as well as
India and of course Europe.
Following the Silverstone event, in
August the teams can go on to
Hockenheim (home of the German F1
GP) for Formula Student Germany
where two of the Varley Red Top
supported teams, Birmingham and
Herts., are listed to compete.
